County Fair

We went to the County Fair on Saturday, and we were so pleased with it! Back in VA, we'd been to the Culpeper Co. Fair (which literally took fifteen minutes to see everything - there were two barns, that was it), the VA State Fair (where the prices were so outrageoius as to leave you feeling sick), to the Orange Co. Fair (which was the only satisfactory one of the three, and was actually quite nice). We also got to go to the Utah State Fair last year, which is another one of my favorites - it's just a bit big for small children who get tired of sitting in the stroller while their mom looks at the quilts and flower arrangements.
So, I'm pleased to announce that the Fair here is perfect! We arrived at 9:00am with two excited little girls. They each got a stamp on their hands, which was very exciting for them, and then we crossed the fair grounds to the show rings. We watched the dog show for about five minutes before the girls got bored - the problem was they were doing obedience testing, and the two dogs had been told to "stay" in the middle of the arena, and we were waiting to see how long they would actually stay. Watching a dog sit isn't very exciting for a one-yr-old.

Then we made our way over to the Horse show. We watched about one full walk/trot competition and even got to see one young rider bucked off, poor kid, before the girls again objected it was too boring. Actually the problem wasn't they were bored, the problem was they wanted to go ride the horses and couldn't understand they weren't allowed to.

So, we made our way over to the barns. We saw sheep, goats, horses, pigs, miniature horses, cows, rabbits, and birds. L is old enough now that she tries to reach into the cages and pet the animals, which makes me so proud of her!
We made it all the way through the art and flower arranging building without the girls trying to jump out, and through the three merchant buildings with the girls holding on to the stroller and walking nicely along.

Then we made our way over to the concessions for lunch. C had inspected them two days earlier, so he was anxious to come back and see some of what they were serving. The girls, true to form, refused everything we bought for them until we caved and presented them with french fries and ice cream ... Hey, we're at the fair, right?

After riding a few rides (video will be posted), we made our way over to the petting zoo. We even got S to touch a few of the animals, especially the large cow who was sitting down with brushes out for anyone who wished to brush her. My personal favorite was the jersey cow who thought I was her own personal salt lick. She was going to town on my arm, which made L laugh and giggle and S run in fear - "The cow's licking Mama!"
That about sums it up, I guess. If you ask L what her favorite part of the fair was, she'll immediately reply that she didn't like going home ... but she did like the pink pig.
